Sick of bad 2016 news? Here are 7 stories that will make you smile

It’s safe to say that 2016 will go down as one of the worst years in recent history. From the rising tensions around the world to the shocking deaths of iconic stars such as David Bowie and Prince, this is one year that many would like to forget existed. While the negative parts of the year have been too much to take for some, you can’t forget about the joyful things that have occurred during these past 12 months. We take a look at some stories that you might have missed that are full of happiness, celebration, and hope.

Meditation in school

Detention is one of the oldest punishments in school. For Robert W. Coleman Elementary School in Baltimore, Maryland, the faculty traded it in for the Mindful Moment Room, which is where unruly kids go to calm themselves down through meditation. The project is a collaboration with the non-profit Holistic Life Foundation. The new tactic has worked wonders; there have been no suspensions in the last two school years.

While there has been a massive amount of hatred towards certain religious groups throughout the year, two kids showed the world that we can all live as one. Casey Pearlman, who is Jewish, and her friend Yasmin Idris, who is Muslim, dressed up as the new superhero duo The Juslims for Halloween. Casey’s dad Jeff, who is a New York Times bestselling author, shared this photo on his Twitter, which instantly became a viral sensation.

Save the turtles

Planet Earth II was one of BBC’s highly anticipated series this year. Each episode averaged around 11 million viewers per week, and the series gained high praise across the board. During the filming of the documentary, the crew ran into some turtles found wandering dangerously in the streets. Thankfully, they collected every single one and placed them back into the sea where they belong.
